Uconn Women Win 100 Straight
February 15, 2017The sports world witnessed a remarkable accomplishment last night in Storrs, Connecticut. The Uconn Women’s Basketball team, lead by one of the greatest Basketball coaches in the history of the sport, Geno Auriemma, accomplished the enormous feat of winning 100 NCAA Basketball games in a row. This streak, which has lasted for 821 days (their last loss was on November 17, 2014) is the longest win streak in D1 College Basketball history, and based off their performance last night, it doesn’t appear that the win streak will end any time soon. A combination of the best program in the history of women’s sports, a team made up of some of the hardest working, game defining women in College Basketball, and one of the greatest coaches in Basketball history have lead the Uconn Women’s Basketball team to a historic feat that we may never see happen again. On the other hand, the Huskies don’t show any signs of letting up anytime soon, so while we may never see another organization record 100 consecutive wins, we might see Uconn record 150 or maybe even 200 consecutive wins.
Without a doubt, this Uconn team is the greatest dynasty we’ve ever seen in either professional or collegiate Basketball. One can definitely argue that the 1960’s Celtics and their 11 Championships over 13 years can definitely be regarded as the most successful dynasty in professional or College Basketball, but Uconn’s 10 Championships over 17 years, impressive 100 game win streak, accomplishment of being the first Women’s College Basketball team to ever win the NCAA Tournament 4 years in a row, and how they completely dominate the competition throughout the league year after year proves that this is the greatest Basketball program we have ever seen. This Huskies team has also produced some of the greatest players to ever play women’s Basketball. Players like Maya Moore and Breanna Stewart not only have 7 of the 10 total Uconn Championships since 2000, but their unique style of play has had a remarkable impact on both Women’s NCAA Basketball and the WNBA. Moore, who has recorded the most points in the history of Uconn’s program, has also seen her impact reflect in professional Basketball with her 3 WNBA Championships and countless personal accolades. Stewart also has a prominent career so far, being the first College Basketball player to ever win 4 NCAA Tournament Championships, ranked 2nd in total points as a Uconn Husky, and being an essential piece to the 100 game win streak Uconn currently holds. Aside from Stewart and Moore, the Uconn Huskies have produced numerous stars that continue to reshape the game of Basketball. The impact these players have had expands outside of just prominent wins. It raises the standard for playing ability and excellence in women’s basketball and it also draws in much needed attention to a sport that is not covered to the extent that it deserves. Essentially, Uconn’s success and the success their players have had during this dynasty has grown, expanded, and evolved women’s basketball, helping to create a better future for women’s basketball and the players, coaches, and teams that will be apart of it.
It’s highly unlikely that we will ever witness a team as excellent as the Uconn Women’s Basketball team ever again in any sport. Being able to take on the best teams in the nation practically every night and still be able to record impressive wins is something that is not only historic, but is something that we have never seen before in either collegiate or professional sports. It’s important that we enjoy and reflect on this remarkable dynasty while it lasts for the time being, because as coach Auriemma stated after the 100th straight win, “one day this will all come to an end”. Of course the Uconn Women’s dynasty will eventually end and other teams across the nation will become the #1 ranked programs, but for now the Huskies are unrelenting and don’t show any signs of discontinuing their greatness. Who knows, maybe in two years we will be celebrating Uconn’s 200th consecutive win, but for now the Uconn Women look to record their 101st consecutive win this Saturday against Tulane.
