The First to 10 Wins in the MLB
April 14, 2018Two weeks into the season and we have our first two teams to 10 wins. The New York Mets (10-1) and the Los Angeles Angels (10-3). Now, it’s obvious that these two crazy starts won’t continue, but let’s breakdown why these two teams have started out as hot as they have.
New York Mets
The Mets have won 8 straight games and have gotten off to the best start in franchise history. They have been playing phenomenal baseball. Their pitching has been solid with Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom leading the way. They both have sub 3.50 ERAs and have held opposing hitters to a sub .250 batting average. Leading the way offensively is Asdrúbal Cabrera who is hitting .333 with 3 home runs and has a .988 OPS. The rest of the offense has been performing above expectations as well. Yoenis Céspedes is struggling average wise but he is making up for it with his 3 home runs and 10 RBIs. Also, Adrián González is having an exceptional start hitting .296 with 8 RBIs. He was traded from the Dodgers to the Braves who then DFA’d him and was then picked up by the Mets. He is playing with a chip on his shoulder and it’s certainly showing. This streak won’t continue, but the Mets are looking like a force to be reckoned with early on.
Los Angeles Angels
When the Angels signed Shohei Ohtani this offseason they quickly gained all the hype that went with him. Everyone said watch out for Ohtani, the two-way star who is still gaining Babe Ruth like comparisons. Before the season started my opinion on Ohtani was that he wouldn’t live up to those expectations, at least not yet, and then the Angels would fall to an average team and the hype would die down. Well, as of right now the Angels are playing red hot baseball. Their bats are hot and the pitching has been solid. Andrelton Simmons, a shortstop known for his stellar defensive play, is leading the way offensively, hitting .345 with a .816 OPS. Also, Mike Trout has been hammering the ball with his 4 home runs, 10 RBIs and .884 OPS. To follow him up, is none other than, Shohei Ohtani, who in his 6 games at the plate is hitting .364 with 3 home runs and 8 RBIs. Pitching wise, Tyler Scaggs (1.69 ERA) and Shohei Ohtani (2.08) are leading the way. The next week or so will show us if the hype is real, but until then the Angels are playing stellar baseball.
