No. 34 Goes to the Rafters, Paul Pierce Celtics Legend
February 12, 2018The moment that I, along with many Celtics fans, have been waiting for finally came yesterday. Celtics legend Paul Pierce’s number 34 was retired last night and sent to the rafters forever. If you didn’t get a chance to watch his jersey retirement it was unbelievable. So many people were here to celebrate the career of Paul Pierce including, but not limited to, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Doc Rivers, Danny Ainge, Celtics Front Office and Owners, James Posey, and the list goes on. As a player, this is the pinnacle of playing the sport you love. Being immortalized forever, and especially by the Boston Celtics, made it that much more special for Pierce.
I have had the opportunity to watch him play for almost his entire career and he was definitely a special player. As Danny Ainge said, Pierce could rebound, score at will, hustle hard, distribute the basketball, and match up against the best player on the opposing team. I have seen Paul hit some great shots in my time as a Celtics fan, and plenty of game winners, but the shot that was the sweetest was when he hit the game winner over LeBron in Miami. It was a great feeling when in our 2007-08 season the big 3 lead by Pierce brought a title back to Beantown and hung banner 17 up to the rafters. He is the Finals MVP of that 2008 Championship team and I could go on about his accolades but there was a reason why we call him The Truth.
Pierce couldn’t be stopped if he was decided he wanted to get buckets, and when it was crunch time it was time for Paul to get the ball. It is beautiful to see his number head to the rafters for the rest of time, and I can’t wait for more stars to head up there with him. Thank you, Paul, for everything that you have done for the city of Boston and the Celtics organization. Forever a legend, The Truth.
