A Whole Lot of Quarters, But No Quarterback

A common story told by football teams for decades, “we need a new Quarterback”.  Who could’ve guessed that the Houston Texans would be in a Quarterback predicament? Probably all football fans, but not many can predict what their plan will be to fix this problem.  However, on the bright side, the Texans have a hefty amount of pocket change in their 32 million dollars of cap space to find and sign a new replacement.

Yes, a replacement is definitely the best option as the two possible starting options are Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden… If this is who the Texans are going to stick with for the season they might as well sign up for the peewee league.  These two Quarterbacks don’t have the mechanics or awareness necessary to command an offense such as the Texans.  What they do need is a Quarterback who has experience and can cut down on costly turnovers.  This is a tall order considering the remaining list of Quarterbacks that are free agents.  Out of this limited list of players there contains a few enticing names such as Colin Kaepernick or Jay Cutler, both of which have their flaws.  For Cutler he doesn’t quite fit the offensive scheme that the Texans run, however having an all around threat such as DeAndre Hopkins it is tempting to want a Quarterback who can just sling a long bomb for Hopkins to chase down.  On the flip side, Colin Kaepernick is very different in his style of play compared to Cutler. Kaepernick’s quick feet and decent pocket awareness is a great contrast against both Savage and Weeden.  This change of pace could prove successful in the long term for the Texans, but often a change like this will come with rough patches of miscommunication and turnovers, both of which the Texans don’t want more of.

Despite not having a clear free agent option, the Texans also have a 25th overall pick in the first round of the draft, which is a helpful plan B, but lack of experience is a challenging obstacle to face as a first year Quarterback.  In addition many of the big name Quarterbacks such as Deshaun Watson and Mitchell Trubisky will most likely be drafted prior to the Texans pick.  Another big name Quarterback that the Texans have their eyes on is Patrick Mahomes, out of Texas Tech.  This familiar name in the home state of the Texans would be a great addition in the eyes of the fans and franchise.  Likewise Mahomes has a good chance of being drafted early but in the off chance that these players stick around late in the first round and the Texans land any of them, it could kick start the revival of the Texan offense.

With all of these options lingering in the works for the Texans there is big decisions to come.  Whether they sign or draft a new Quarterback, the Texans have the skill on both sides of the ball to make a significant playoff push this year, and with the right fit at Quarterback we might even see a scary postseason opponent.
