2018 Winter Olympics Hockey Preview

With the 2018 Winter Olympics now just a few days away it’s time to do a quick preview of odds and predictions for the hockey tournament in South Korea. After looking over the rosters fairly quickly you may not recognize a bunch of names right from the start.This time around the NHL commissioner has decided to not let NHL players play in the Olympic Games. Personally, I think this will hurt the ratings, but that is for another article another day.

Now time for who will win this thing.The favorites according to oddshark.com are the Olympic Athletes of Russia, followed by Canada, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, and USA. After those 6 teams there is a huge drop off in odds. With Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia, Norway, Slovenia, and finally, South Korea.

 

In my opinion the medal winners will come out of the top 5 teams listed, so I have recreated the top 6 in my order of best odds to win gold.

  1. Olympic Athletes of Russia
  2. Canada
  3. USA
  4. Sweden
  5. Finland
  6. Czech Republic

To a point I wish the rosters would just be the world junior rosters, but these are ex-NHL players with a sprinkle of the young prospects on the junior teams. At least that way we get a look at the NHL stars of tomorrow. Still it should be an interesting tournament with entertaining games from top to bottom.
