First to Home: July 19th MLB News and Notes
July 19, 2017Red Sox Win in 15: The Red Sox came back from a late 3-1 deficit to force extra innings and eventually win 5-4 in 15 innings on a Hanley Ramirez Walkoff Homer. The Red Sox hitting is still struggling mightily, but Dustin Pedroia’s clutch hitting has kept them afloat during this cold streak.
Cubs on a Roll: The Cubs starting pitching, along with their bats, are both turning it around during their 5 game win streak. On Tuesday John Lackey turned in a terrific start in the 5-1 victory over the Braves. They are now only 2.5 games back of the struggling Brewers in the division.
Astros Win Without Correa: The Astros showed on Tuesday, that even without their stud shortstop Carlos Correa (Out 6 weeks with torn ligament in thumb) the team is still among the MLB’s best. Jose Altuve had yet another 3 hit game in the 6-2 win over the Mariners.
Harper and Trout Square Off: Mike Trout and Bryce Harper squared off for the first time since 2014 on Tuesday and they didn’t disappoint. Each homered in the first inning, but Harper would eventually get the last laugh; he went 4-4 with 2 runs scored in the 4-3 Nats victory.
Clayton Kershaw and The Dodgers: Just stop Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers beat the White Sox 1-0 on Tuesday in a game Kershaw once again dominated. The Dodgers have now won 10 straight games and the combination of Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood now have a ridiculous combined record of 26-2.
Rays Comeback: Down 3-2 in the 9th inning, the Rays took advantage of Oakland’s depleted bullpen, scoring twice to win the game 4-3. The Rays are beginning to play like a definite playoff team, but we will soon see if they have the resources to make a move to help their bullpen or add an effective low strikeout rate bat before the deadline.
