First to Home: June 28th MLB News and Notes

Yankees Lose Heartbreaker: The Yankees were ahead 3-1 going into the bottom 8th, but Tyler Clippard surrendered a run in the hold situation, and then in the 9th Dellin Betances gave up a 2 run walk off single to Jose Abreu and the White Sox walked off with a 4-3 victory. The Yankees have now lost 11 of 14 games.

Rockies Stumble Again:  Going into their series vs. the last place Giants, it seemed the perfect recipe for the Rockies to end their cold spell. However, after losing in extras after surrendering a late lead, the Rockies have now lost 7 games in a row. They continue to lose a lot of ground in the NL West as the Diamondbacks and Dodgers are two of the hottest teams in baseball and each won again on Tuesday night.

Adrian Beltre: Since the return of Adrian Beltre to the Rangers lineup a few weeks ago the Rangers have seen notable offensive progress. Beltre slammed his 450th career Home Run off of the struggling Indians reliever Cody Allen to give the Rangers a huge 2-1 win. The Rangers are again above .500, but can they finally string some wins together?

Rays Win In Extras: The Rays simply will not quit on their pursuit to steal the AL East title. After a few difficult losses to the Orioles over the weekend, the Rays won in 10 innings against the Pirates to stay 3 games behind the Red Sox in the AL East. Alex Cobb pitched 6 innings of no hit ball, before surrendering a single to Pittsburgh second baseman, Josh Harrison, in the bottom of the 7th.

Max Scherzer: After only surrendering 1 ER in 6 innings of work against the Cubs in a 6-1 Nats victory, Scherzer continues his latest push to lower his ERA under 2.0; while that would just statistically represent his real dominance is visual. He is making a case for being the best pitcher in baseball. He and Kershaw appear to be on a trajectory for a contentious Cy Young debate at years end.

Red Sox Win 2 Straight: While the Red Sox have claimed first place in the division, it says more about the Yankees failures than Boston’s triumphs. Yet after a dominating 9-2 victory, the Red Sox have now won 2 straight games for the first time in 2 weeks. Maybe they are finally ready to pull away?
