Patrick and His New Mahomies

Another draft has come and gone, leaving some teams with great additions and others with absolute busts.  One team that made a great move this draft was the Kansas City Chiefs, with their trade up for the 10th pick in the first round for Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech University.  This fresh Quarterback addition is a perfect fit for the Chiefs’ offensive scheme, and Andy Reid’s high tempo offense and Patrick Mahomes’s gun slinging arm will be a force to be reckoned with.

Despite the perfect fit, Mahomes will need time to get acquainted with the caliber of play in the NFL.  Under Alex Smith’s wing, Mahomes will learn the valuable lessons of ball security and how to cut down on costly turnovers.  These important lessons can be the difference in limiting a rookie Quarterback’s easily readable body language.  In addition, with Smith’s 13 years of experience, he will provide Mahomes with a luxury that many first round Quarterbacks don’t get, and that is a sense of comfort.  Many first round Quarterbacks are thrown into their starting season unaware of what to expect.  Yes they get the summer to train with the team, but this is rarely ever enough to allow them to control the pace of a real game.  Therefore, with the remaining years of Smith at the helm of the Chiefs’ offensive ship, he will give the impressionable rookie time to feel comfortable in the driver seat before he actually steps foot onto the field.

On top of Smith’s teachings, the Chiefs offense has some pivotal players that fit right into Mahomes wheelhouse.  The big play threat at Tight End, known as Travis Kelce, is a great target for Mahomes’s cannon like arm.  The combination is a scary sight for secondaries across the league.  With Travis’s smart route running and deep threat capability, many teams will be forced to play deep zones, or at least man up on Kelce, leaving areas of the field open for Mahomes to showcase his scrambling skills.  Therefore, being able to attack the holes, he will keep the defense unsure of what to prevent against, which would lead to defensive mistakes that result in points for Kansas City.  This may be harder than it sounds but the point is Mahomes is a unique Quarterback that has a deceiving ability to extend plays either through the air or on the ground.  His well-rounded sense of play just might be what the future of the Chiefs need to be successful in their Super Bowl hunt.
